3 Steps To Jumping Higher To Dunk
I get this question all the time. How can I jump higher so I can dunk? Well the bottom line is you’ll need to clear the rim by at least 8 or 9 inches to dunk with authority. So there are several ways to go about this thing.
It always confuses me how so many players want to dunk but they don’t know the first thing about increasing their vertical. First, if you want to dunk or jump higher, the first thing I say is, get out there and start jumping.
When I was younger I would jump and touch everything I saw. If there was a street sign, I’d jump and touch it if it looked high. I would constantly jump and try to get higher and higher on the backboard.
First I touched the backboard. Then I nipped the rim. Then I was hanging on the rim. Then I was hanging on it with two hands and dunking.
So here are 3 simple steps to help you get up higher so you can dunk. First, how high can you get up?
Step One: Measure yourself. Figure out your vertical.
That’s the difference in inches between the highest point you can touch on a vertical standing jump and your highest reach in a standing position.
Once you figure out your vertical.
Step Two: Subtract that from 10 feet and then add 8 inches.
Mark that number down. That’s how high you need to get up to be able to dunk with authority. I did this. I remember turning over a garbage can in the park and standing on the can and putting a mark on the backboard of where I needed to touch to be able to dunk.
It wasn’t long before I was jumping way higher than that mark and dunking with authority in the process.
Step Three: You’ll want to work on both your vertical jump and off the run or approach (one-leg).
I think versatility is important because some times in a game you won’t be able to gather your steps. Or sometimes you may need to go up for the vertical and catch the dunk.
Now that you know your goal it’s time to get out there and start jumping. Jump daily. On an average I was jumping anywhere from 50-100 times per day to reach my target.
This was good because I was training my muscles and ripping them to shreds forcing them to get stronger and stronger to catapult me higher. So if you’re not jumping, get out there and get at it.
There are so many exercises and books on this subject, but if you did nothing more than this, you’d see your vertical increase like never before.
